When To Start Potty Training My 18 Month Old?? Is The Signs There?

My son is 18 months. I don’t know if its time yet or not. We have potty training seat in our bathroom. He’ll sit on it and he’ll play with the flushing it. Also he likes to flush our toliet. BUt no real sign of him sitting down when he’s peeing or pooing. I know some kids train as late as 3 or so I hear. I just don’t wnat the signs to be there and I”m over looking them.

  1. I was potty trained at 16 months. If he is curious then you could start him in the right direction. If he shows signs of doing any sort of pattern before he uses the bathroom then you can train him. He can tell he’s about to go if he does something specific before hand. It can’t hurt to start trying to train him since he’s curious about it.

  2. well i dont have a son but i have 4 daughter and am potty training my third one right now. se just turned 2 in november and i knew she was ready but a few things; she would pee in her diaper 1 time, and shed come crying to me holding the diaper up (that shed taken off) saying “pee”. several times i had even caught her in on the toilet by herself with her clothes on, but she had gotten up there by herself. also, lately i have caught her taking her diaper off and then going in and putting “big girl” panties on by herself. so i knew she was ready to wear panties and she didnt like wearing a diaper. hope this helps and good luck with potty training! remember, when u start potty training, dont get frustrated because theyll see that and it will confuse them even more. lots and lots of praise when it comes time, and remind him every 5 or 10 min.,, just ask him if he needs to go potty. good luck!

  3. I would wait till he is 2 yrs old at least… he is just mimicking what he sees u all do and pretty soon he will be ready but i dont think right now he may be harder to potty train at this age if u push him too far let him wear diapers a little while longer and then try when he gets really close to two or so…

  4. Him sitting on the potty to get used to it is a good start. I also started sitting my kids down on the potty before they got into the bath. They sat there while I got the bath ready and a lot of times the sound of the running water would trigger the pee-pee and then we would clap and make a big deal out of it. Also try the “Once Upon a Potty” book. They have it for girls and boys. Doing those things combined (sitting on potty before bath and reading the book) help to spark an interest in and raise awareness of the whole potty training concept. With those seeds planted, your son will start letting you know when he is ready by telling you when he is going pee-pee or even before he has to and you to will start to recognize the signs. As far as the age thing goes, it all depends on your child. I have 5 and every one of them potty trained at a different age. The Huggies website also has great information on potty training and will send you newsletters via e-mails if you sign up for them. Just remember to make it fun and don’t push your son, just keep encouraging. He will do it when he’s ready! Potty training little ones is always and adventure! Good luck!

  5. It sounds like he’s still not ready. Signs would be telling you right after he goes potty mom change me or something along those lines… Although having him sit there and get him familiar with what goes on isn’t a bad thing. I started putting my son on his potty chair around 15 months just to get him used to the flushing sound and things like that. He’s 2 and a half years old now and tells me when he needs to go …if he’s not distracted by something more fun. Also take him in with you when you go potty.. Then he will start to associate the “sounds” with what you are doing and he will learn when you sit him on there what is supposed to happen.
