Potty Training Twins
If you have twins or children of a similar age you may feel that potty training them together may seem like a time-saver, but it doesn’t always work out that way, as your children may approach readiness at different times.
A key point to remember is that not all children are ready at the same time and the ’signs’ as noted in Potty Training Tips - are they ready? must be looked out for. Don’t compare your children to each other or to any other children.
Their readiness has nothing to do with their intelligence or abilities but only their readiness to be potty trained.
It is akin to children learning how to tie their shoes, ride a bike, they will ‘master’ these skills in their own time and be proficient at different time to other kids.
It’s likely that if one child is ready sooner than the other, that child will become ready more quickly just by watching and learning from her sibling.
So keep your eyes open to watch for signs that I have highlighted before in Potty Training Tips - are they ready?
How to prepare
Purchase at least two potty chairs (I recommend Baby Bjorn Potty and chair), because you’ll want one for each child so they can emulate each other.
Also once you get in the routine of visiting the potty after meals and before going to bed this would help prevent accidents.
It is also beneficial to set up a mini play area or have a few toys near by so to keep the other twin patient and occupied while the other uses the potty.
What you also have to keep in mind is that the two children are individual and may learn via different methods, and remember to stay patient.
TOP TIPS
> If the twins eat at the same time it would be beneficial to have two potty chairs.
> Separate the twins or siblings when using the potty as they can have a tendency to distract the other and not allow them to focus.
> You may need different rewards for each child.
> There will be more than twice the ‘accidents’.
> One child may train faster but do not hurry the other.
> Keep mental notes of when each child visits the toilet.
> They will take turns being ‘naughty’. Be prepared.
> Try not to go crazy!
