At What Age Did You Start Potty Training Your Baby Boy?

I plan to introduce the potty to my son when he is 18 months old. I am a first time mother so I’m just wondering what other people have done.

  1. Back when we were kids, it was normal practice to train the kids earlier. The doctor told my mom that a normal window for potty training is 15-18 months!
Of course I tried to live up to this with my son and failed miserably. I think if you are consistent and dedicated and not willing to let the child fail, ANY kid can be potty trained at that time..but it is a lot of work and effort if the kid isn’t quite ready.
Some kids are ready; some are not. I would rather wait till my child was showing signs of readiness rather than forcing it. Sure they can learn either way….But the choice is yours. Buy a potty chair; see if he shows any interest in sitting on it. If you think he’s ready and is trying to “imitate” sitting on potty then go for it.
Decide based on what you are willing to put into it and how you think your child will do at this age.
    Good luck!
(I was watching this documentary about adoption from a Russian orphanage and there were little bitty babies there on potty chairs; like as soon as they could walk! Cultures vary too)

  2. One thing I did was offer an m&m for each successful visit to the bathroom. I don’t like giving candy all the time, and some parents would disagree, but it worked, and worked fast. There are also storybooks you can read to your son over and over to get the jist of it. There is even a book where you can get your son’s name on every page of the book so he like’s reading it even more.

  3. I started with my 1st at 18 months and he really got into it, he was about 2, 2 1/2 before he was trained through the night though. Boys are a little harder than girls, but with time, routine and patience it should be fine. My 2nd son was 3 1/2 before he was trained fully, but that was partially my fault, and he was real lazy about it. Can’t wait to train my little girl! Lol.

  4. My Mom kept him from the time he was 6 months - she started putting him on the potty after he ate, and we were able to stop buying diapers and pull ups when he was 22 months. Loved it!

  5. Introducing the potty at 18 months is what I did, BUT he wasn’t quite ready. He was almost 3 before he was totally out of diapers. From the time he was just a bit over two he was in “big boy” pants, but would bring me a diaper when he needed to “poop”. We moved right before he turned 3 and somehow during the move we didn’t have diapers handy and I just shrugged my shoulders and said “guess you have to use the potty this time”. Never needed another diaper…whew!

  6. I started one month after my sons second birthday. He did fine but all children are different. Try putting a potty chair in the bathroom and see if he show interest. Good luck.
